Chairman’s Speech

Happy New Year 2019 to all visitors of the website. Let’s pray that the coming of the new year will build a new spirit for us to continuously strive towards improving our excellence in services in fulfilling the mission and vision of the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM).

Alhamdulillah, I am grateful to Allah SWT for His blessings and grace I am given the responsibility to be the new Chairman of LKIM effective as of 1 November 2018 in conjunction with 47 years of the establishment of LKIM. Let’s work together as one big family towards preserving the intentions and goals of LKIM.

To date, LKIM has a great responsibility in safeguarding the welfare and well-being of fishermen as well as developing the nation’s fisheries sector and industry. The challenge is not only focusing on fisheries contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or ensuring adequate supply of fish in the country. In fact, this year stores a bigger challenge in assisting the target groups with the introduction of the Targeted Incentive Assistance to fishermen across the country to ensure those who are truly eligible to receive the proper assistance.

In addressing the challenges of developing the fisheries industry, LKIM aims to increase the amount of fish supply at a fair price to cater for the needs of Malaysians. It is my hope that all parties involved, especially fishery industry players, play a role in ensuring that the fish market prices are always at reasonable levels in order to reduce the burdens of living costs for the people.

Through the 2019 Budget which was tabled on 2 November 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry has allocated RM4.417 billion to further develop the country’s agricultural sector and increase productivity and income of its target groups i.e. farmers, breeders and fishermen. This includes provisions for the proposed rationalization and restructuring of aids / incentives for fishermen which amounts to a total of RM135.9 million.

Hence, LKIM will strive to work harder to realize the Government’s desire to develop the sector and the fisheries industry through the use of automation technologies and innovation. Changes will continue to be implemented to ensure that the fisheries sector is not marginalized and left behind in line with the changes to be brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).

With respect to that, I urge all LKIM citizens to adopt a fresh and vibrant new work culture to ensure that the planning can be implemented successfully. LKIM needs to be a protector of target groups and those concerned with competence, trust and care in the work culture practiced. All of this requires the change and courage of each individual either directly or indirectly towards a better future.

I take this opportunity once again to wish all a Happy New Year 2019 and call on all visitors of this website to continue to be the backbone and supporter for the development of the fisheries sector and industry in Malaysia. Hopefully LKIM will continue to protect the interests of fishermen so that the prosperity will continue to be enjoyed by the whole community.

Thank you.

Best regards
